Currently, I regularly teach etching classes at Bead Q in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Starting in September 2010 I will also be teaching beading and etching classes at BayArts in Bay Village, Ohio. Below is some information about classes; my class schedule is in the sidebar of this page. Etched Layered Pendant
(Bead Q)
One 3-hour workshop
This workshop teaches a simple chemical process for etching copper and brass along with several finishing techniques. You will combine several etched pieces into a layered pendant that is uniquely yours. A variety of ideas for incorporating etched pieces into your work will be presented.
Please note: Etching is messy business. If you really love your manicure and/or hate to get your hands dirty, this is not the workshop for you. We’ll be filing and sanding and using chemicals and colorants. Please wear clothing that won’t cause you heartbreak if it gets stained.
Level: beginner
You need to bring: jewelry pliers for opening and closing jump rings
Optional tools/materials: (bring them if you have them, but no need to run out and buy them just for this workshop) rubber stamps, laser-cut stickers, fine sanding sponge, fine metal files
Kit fee: $10 paid directly to instructor the day of class (cash or check), in addition to class fee (paid in advance to the shop)
Skills learned: chemical etching of brass and copper, adding color to metal, filing techniques
Beginning Etching

Three 2.5-hour sessions
Learn the basics of etching copper and brass with ferric chloride. The first class session will cover the etching process; the other two sessions will cover a variety of finishing techniques and ideas and methods for assembling your etched pieces into jewelry and other creative projects. Class fee includes all essential materials and shared use of tools; an optional additional supply list is below.

Optional tools/materials: (bring them if you already have them, but no need to run out and buy them just for this workshop; tools will be available to share) rubber stamps, jewelry pliers (chain nose and round nose), wire cutters, lightweight hammer, steel bench block or small anvil, metal shears or heavy-duty tin snips, jeweler’s saw and blades (1/0 or 2/0), portable bench pin that will clamp to a table, fine-toothed files, draw-down punch or other metal punch that will pierce up to 18 gauge, beads or other objects to incorporate into your finished pieces
Skills learned: chemical etching of brass and copper; adding patina and color to metal; cutting, filing, and shaping techniques; simple wire wraps
Jewelry Jump Start
(BayArts)
Three 2-hour sessions
Learn the basics of stringing beads and making wire loops in this no-fear class for beginners. You’ll learn about different kinds of beads, findings, stringing materials, wire, and tools as you make necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. By the end of the session, you’ll be crimping and looping with confidence. Class fee includes all materials and shared use of tools, but feel free to bring any beads or tools you may already have.
Level: beginner
You need to bring: your glasses, if you need them for close work
Optional tools/materials: (bring them if you already have them, but no need to run out and buy them just for this workshop; tools will be available to share) jewelry pliers (flat-nose and round-nose), beading wire cutters, crimping tool for 2×2 crimps, assorted beads and clasps
Skills learned: choosing beads and clasps, stringing beads, crimping, simple loops, wrapped loops, opening and closing jump rings, wireworking basics
